Occupational therapists help older adults to choose and use specialised equipment like wheelchairs, mobility scooters and walking aids to assist their clients to move around their homes and other environments. Occupational therapists can also help adapt their client’s homes to accommodate their individual needs. They can make recommendations to install rails or ramps in their client’s homes to better facilitate safe mobility. Empowering their clients to complete everyday tasks using these aids will boost their confidence and improve their well-being.
A physiotherapist will focus on treating a client’s injury and working to improve his/her ability to perform movement of the human body. Physiotherapy focuses on improving physical measures such as joint range of movement, muscle strength and endurance. Meanwhile, occupational therapy focuses on assisting a person to improve their ability to perform regular daily activities independently, following or during a period of physical impairment.
Occupational therapy is great for those who are unable to take care of themselves, move easily, or perform a normal function in their home or work environment because of illness, pain, injury, or disability.
