Absolutely! Speech therapy is much more than talking. The role of a speech therapist is diverse; we work on many aspects of communication, as well as feeding and swallowing. Communication includes articulation, fluency, language, social skills, cognition, literacy and hearing.
In adults, the more common impediments are swallowing/feeding issues, stuttering and loss of language and speech due to brain injury.
In children, the more common difficulties we treat are stuttering, delays with articulation, language, social communication and literacy. We work with children who have a range of disabilities including autism spectrum disorders.
Very few disorders will simply go away on their own. More often than not, speech therapy interventions are required to treat speech delays and disorders. The length of treatments can vary and depend on the type of disorder. Some difficulties can take a few months to resolve while others may require ongoing intervention for many years. Often home therapy activities are given to clients to follow up regularly between sessions to ensure the success of the program and intervention. Goals are reviewed regularly in collaboration with clients and their families/carers.
There is no difference between the two, the two terms are used interchangeably. In Australia, the terms speech pathologist, speech-language pathologist (SLP), speech therapist and ‘speechie’ for short are primarily used.
